So what’s a Christmas tree, anyway? It’s the centerpiece of the Christmas celebration. But that Christmas decoration is appropriate for your first Christmas at home? Should you go all out and decorate with just about anything or should you simplify the process and spend a few dollars? In this article we will try to answer these questions and more…
First, let’s talk about the word Christmas. What does the word ‘Christmas’ really mean? The commonly used definition is a period of spring predating the arrival of winter. Others think the word refers to the Christian celebration of the Winter Solstice. So for purposes of this article, we’ll define Christmas as the festive season which includes Christmas shopping, decorating of the home, sending out gifts, and eating Christmas food.
So the first step for a first time Christmas at home enthusiast is to choose a unique decorative bauble. Traditionally, glass was the material of choice. But today, there are so many different materials available that glass can become overused. My personal favorite is a beautiful sterling silver bauble set with white and red gingham ribbons.
Once you have a unique bauble, the next step is to pick a holiday theme. For our first holiday, I chose to emulate the old-fashioned theme of a beautiful Christmas dinner followed by a round of Frosty the Snowman play. For this first Christmas at home, my mother-in-law chose to decorate our dining room table with a beautiful sterling silver centerpiece. This table centerpiece served as the centerpiece for our first holiday together.
As with my first Christmas at home, my mother-in-law’s choice of a holiday theme didn’t last long. But my personal favorite remains her whimsical “Merry Christmas Bauble” centerpiece. This whimsical bauble consists of two small Christmas gifts adhered to white metal circular strips that circle the bauble. The gifts are wrapped in colorful cellophane and place in a clear Christmas gift box.
After setting up the “Merry Christmas” centerpiece, the next order of business was to decorate our front porch. Again, my mom-in-law picked a lovely sterling silver Christmas door centerpiece. It was in the shape of a snowman with a smiley face facing a smiley heart. Then I added to the exterior of the front porch with a cluster of smaller silver-colored baubles. We added a number of outdoor lights and a few strands of artificial or real snow. To finish off the exterior look, we wrapped a garland of balloons around the doorway to provide a festive touch.
When the first Christmas at home was finally to come, the “first Christmas bauble” was already on display. It was still the “Merry Christmas Bauble” but this time it was filled with tiny Christmas baubles! This was perfect as I had purchased and installed a small Christmas light fixture right above it.
That was the beauty of the “first Christmas bauble”. We could have put just about anything in it would still have been magical! We found that it was our little Christmas light show! I think we all enjoyed it immensely!
Our next “1st Christmas in a New Home” adventure was more exciting than the first one! It was a wicker bassinette for us to use to play music from my newly purchased upright guitar. We picked out some Christmas songs that were appropriate for our little Christmas wreath. My daughter sang along while I strummed the guitar and we played “Silent Night”. It was just the beginning of a very enchanting evening!
When we were done playing “Silent Night” I opened up the Christmas music box that rested against the wall and retrieved one of those wonderful little Christmas baubles! It was a lifesaver at that moment. A perfect bauble for the holiday! We were all grinning from ear to ear as we opened up the gift. The bauble was even better than the first Christmas bauble because it was a “real” bauble!
Christmas in our home is definitely an unforgettable event. It brings a smile to my face every time I see that beautiful Christmas bauble on the wall. I wish that all people could experience what our family has. It truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity to share this wonderful time of the year with friends and family.
Don’t wait too long to add a little something to your own home this Christmas. Why not start the fun by putting up a “1st Christmas in a New Home” bauble? You will have your guests and family over for dinner and they will be so impressed! The memories that you create by playing “Familiar Face” with your loved ones will last forever!
